Tribute & Message From The Family

Calvin Van Den Elst, age 70, passed away in his home on August 11, 2017.

Calvin was a member of Vriesland Reformed Church and formerly of Peace Reformed. Faith, family and fellowship were the core values of Cal's life. Old Cal, a self given nick-name, enjoyed sharing his faith while meeting new people when traveling, fishing and camping. Cal would engage anyone in a conversation. He was selfless, always putting the needs of others before his own. Cal had the biggest heart, the strongest faith and the singing voice of an angel.

He worked at Hansen Machine Co. for 37 ½ years as a tool & die maker. He loved gardening, woodworking, furniture and cabinet making. For example, he had the quality cherry wood he cut and kiln dried from the shore of Lake Michigan made into a beautiful casket by an Amish craftsman.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; children, Sarah & Larry Cook, Carrie & Jack Kulick; grand-children, Kyla Cook, Caleb Cook, Alexandria Vander Woude; sister, Carol Van Den Elst; brother, Robert & Barb Van Den Elst; brother-in-law, Arnold & Sylvia Van Beek; and sisters-in-law, Ilean & Lee Hollaar and Jacqueline & Michael Langley.

Visitation is 7:00-9:00 pm on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St. Zeeland, MI 49464.

Funeral services are 11:00 am Friday, August 18 at Vriesland Reformed Church, 6839 Byron Rd., Zeeland, MI 49464.

Burial to take place in West Drenthe Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to RCA Gift of Hope.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Dear Connie & Family, I just heard of Cal's passing today. I am so sorry for your loss. I only knew Cal in facing the difficulties he was having in the last few months, but was so blessed by his faith and trust that God would use his journey for a loving purpose that would grow the family of God. I will forever remember Cal for his selfless journey and am so thankful for knowing him.

I worked with Cal over 50 years ago at Hansen Machine when we were in our late teens. He had purchased an old pickup in Grand Rapids and I helped him tow it home on a Saturday afternoon. He had it all mapped out on country back roads to end up on Lugers Road. He also would ride a unicycle in the shop at break time. He was a good friend and a great guy. My condolences to his family..
