Dorothy Rose (Rolfe) Humes of Battle Creek, MI
Dorothy , age 100, died peacefully Monday afternoon, February 13, 2017 at the Care Community of Springfield, MI
Dorothy was born on March 28, 1916 to Charles and Alvina Rolfe in Battle Creek, MI. Dorothy graduated from Battle Creek Central High School, class of 1935, and Nichols School of Nursing, class of 1938. Her first nursing jobs were at the American Legion Hospital and Community Hospital. She then took some time off to raise her children, before going back to nursing as an industrial nurse at Eaton Manufacturing and public health. Lastly she was a visiting nurse for the Calhoun County Health Dept., retiring in 1980. After retirement she still continued to give helpful nursing advice to family, friends, and neighbors. She was a dedicated nurse and attended a regular luncheon with her nurse colleagues for decades.
Dorothy married Donald Humes in June 1943 and celebrated 59 years of marriage until his passing in 2002. In their retirement they wintered in Port Charlotte, Florida until 2010. They also enjoyed traveling to various locations to celebrate with Don's WWII fellows at their army reunions. Dorothy was an avid crafter. She enjoyed making crochet animals and dolls for her grandchildren, knitting many afghans, making shell creations from the shells she found on the Florida beaches, and making beaded bracelets and jewelry for her family and friends.
Dorothy is survived by daughter Sandra Parks (Jack) and son Charles Douglas Humes; grandchildren Pamela Rolfe, Dawn Parks, Heather Rudd (Gary); great grandchildren Candice Berlin, Emma Monroe, Delainey Rudd, Garrison Rudd, Preston Rudd and Sienna Owens; great, great grandson Epiy Torres. Preceding her in death: her husband, Donald, brother Charles Rolfe Jr., sister Margariet Rolfe, grandson Jon Parks and granddaughter Courtney Humes.
