Laura Hughes, age 88, of Rothbury, MI, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017. Born May 29, 1928 in Wood River, Illinois, she was the youngest daughter of Giacomo and Vita (Spano) Viola. While living and working in Phoenix, Arizona she met Raymond Hughes. They married on December 27, 1954 in Phoenix and moved to Montague, Michigan. A longtime resident of Rothbury and Zephyrhills, Florida, Mrs. Hughes was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Montague. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at the White Duck Market. She was also a long-time fan of the Detroit Tigers and enjoyed watching the many songbirds at her feeders. She is survived by her children, Dennis Hughes, Patrick Hughes and Bonnie (Thomas) Smith; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Laura Englert and Rebecca, Benjamin, Sarah and Hannah Hughes; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; daughter, Teresa Englert; son-in-law, William Englert; daughter-in-law, Margaret Hughes; sister, Louise Maroni; and brothers, Tony and Joe Viola. Visitation is Thursday, April 20th, 6-8 pm at Harris Funeral Home. The Memorial Mass will be held Friday, April 21st, 11 am at St. James Catholic Church in Montague with Father Peter Omogo as Celebrant.
