Harold Wesley Mayes, 84, of Bellevue, died July 13, 2011 at Heartland Health Care Center in Battle Creek with family by his side. He was born September 1, 1926, the son of Vernon W. and Ruth (Darby) Mayes in Kalamazoo and lived with his grandmother, Grace M. Darby in Battle Creek. Harold attended Battle Creek Central High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned to Battle Creek and worked as a union journeyman electrician for Local 445 for 50 years. In 1953 Harold married Ellen Lute. They moved to their rural Bellevue farm where he enjoyed raising beef cattle, gardening, tractors, farm equipment, his motorcycle and retirement. He enjoyed the many visits from his great grandchildren. Harold is survived by his wife, Ellen Mayes of Bellevue; daughter, April (Michael) Olney of Bellevue; son, Raymond (Valerie) Mayes of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Joe, Daneil, Jared and Bryan; two great grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd Mayes of Carson City, Martin (Glenis) Mayes of Middleton, Delbert (Francis) Mayes of Whitmore Lake; sisters, Jean Mayes and Marie Mayes, both of Lansing and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandmother; parents; sister, Hazel Mayes; brothers, Wendell Mayes and Lloyd Mayes. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6:00 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011at Shaw Funeral Home (2838 Capital Ave. SW, Battle Creek) and from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011 at New Life Church and Ministries (corner of M-37 and Hickory Road). Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church with Pastor Dan Osborn officiating. Interment, Assyria Cemetery. Donations may go to Heartland Health Care Center, for activities (200 E.
